TikTok: A World Divided between Growth and Controversies
TikTok: Between Global Success and Growing Concerns
Since its inception in 2017, TikTok has undergone exponential growth, rapidly becoming the social media platform of choice, especially among the younger demographic. With 1.7 billion global users and 150 million European users within just six years, TikTok has achieved heights that took other social networks over a decade to reach.
However, beneath the apparent success of this short-form video-sharing app, concerns are growing, particularly regarding data collection, misinformation, and alleged connections with the Chinese government.
The Meteoric Rise of TikTok
TikTok became the standout phenomenon of 2020, largely driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which compelled people to spend more time on their phones. The app topped the charts as the most downloaded of the year, surpassing established giants like WhatsApp and Facebook.
Yet, behind this meteoric rise, increasing concerns emerge, notably from Western governments questioning the potential drawbacks of this Chinese digital giant.
Opacity and Concerns around Data Collection
One of the primary concerns raised pertains to TikTok’s data collection practices. While many users freely share information such as their birthdate, email address, and search history, the opacity of the company raises concerns, particularly regarding the destination of this data.
Western governments question TikTok’s transparency, not only in political matters and its ties with the Chinese regime but also in all aspects of its operations.
The Dangers of Misinformation and Propaganda
TikTok, with its powerful recommendation algorithm, has become fertile ground for misinformation and propaganda. The app, primarily targeting a young audience, has faced criticism for the spread of false information. Reports indicate that up to 20% of news-related videos on TikTok are either false or misleading.
Moreover, TikTok’s addictive algorithm, designed to keep users on the app for as long as possible, has been likened to “digital cocaine,” raising concerns about its impact on mental health, especially among young users.
Regulation Measures and TikTok’s Responses
In response to growing concerns, Western governments seek to regulate TikTok. In Europe, the Digital Services Act (DSA) will come into effect in February 2024, imposing strict rules on major digital platforms.
TikTok has responded by launching initiatives like Project Clover, aiming to store European user data in European centers. However, these proposals haven’t completely allayed concerns, leaving doubts about potential Chinese government access to this data.

As Western governments intensify pressure for stricter regulation, TikTok’s future remains uncertain. The upcoming elections and regulatory developments could play a decisive role in the fate of this app that swiftly conquered the world.
