A mixed-race couple in crisis<\/strong> is not in crisis because the two partners come from different backgrounds. It can become so when one or both are living their relationship in secret, fear their relatives\u2019 reactions, or face remarks that reduce the other person to their skin colour, origin or an assumed identity.<\/p>\n

In the situation discussed here, a Moroccan woman and a Senegalese man, who have been together for two years and wish to get engaged, hide their relationship from their families. The secrecy weighs on their daily lives: interrupted calls, a partner saved under a false identity, belongings hidden away before a relative comes over. This concealment eventually becomes hurtful to the man, who no longer wants to feel that he is tolerated only as long as he remains invisible.<\/p>\n

The crisis also reveals a more complex reality: prejudice does not come from only one side. The woman\u2019s family rejects the idea of her being with a Black man; the man\u2019s family also makes hostile remarks about Arab or Moroccan people. The issue, then, is not any supposed incompatibility between two cultures, but racism and opposition to mixed relationships expressed within their families.<\/p>\n
