someone from their community?

Colorism: a skin-tone hierarchy within communities

Colorism refers to discrimination based on skin tone, generally within the same racial group or community. It rests on a greater value being placed on lighter skin and on features considered closer to Western standards: light skin, straight hair or fine features, for example.

This dynamic should not be confused with racism, even though it may be connected to broader racial hierarchies. Racism targets or differentiates racialized groups; colorism also organizes preferences and devaluation among people who may be perceived as belonging to the same group.

Its expressions can be explicit: remarks about the darkness of someone’s skin, compliments reserved for lighter-skinned people, comparisons between siblings, or the association of certain physical features with supposedly superior beauty. They can also take more indirect forms, through the lack of representation of certain skin tones or facial features in images that are socially valued.

A nickname presented as affectionate can therefore be ambiguous when it associates light skin with a quality, intelligence or a form of distinction. The speaker’s benevolent intention does not necessarily erase its effect, especially for someone growing up in an environment where this kind of message is repeated.

Why naming colorism can matter

When an experience remains unnamed, it can be harder to share and understand. Some people have long felt discomfort in response to comparisons of skin colour or dominant beauty standards without identifying the phenomenon at work. Discovering the term “colorism” can then make it possible to connect a personal experience to a broader social mechanism.

Naming it does not mean confining every relationship, preference or remark to a definitive category. It does, however, make it possible to open a discussion about what is valued, made invisible or disparaged. Recognizing the problem does not prevent people from building self-esteem; it simply avoids placing sole responsibility on those concerned to adapt to standards that devalue them.

Family education can provide essential support. Valuing every child regardless of their appearance offers important protection. But strong self-esteem does not make judgments heard at school, in the street, at work, on social media or in dating spaces disappear. Both dimensions matter: strengthening individuals and questioning collective norms.

Racial fetishization: when background becomes the focus of desire

Attraction to a racialized person is not, in itself, fetishization. The problem arises when interest focuses on an actual or presumed background, skin colour, or sexual and cultural stereotypes to the point that the individual disappears behind a category.

Racial fetishization can take the form of repeated remarks about “exoticism,” fantasies tied to someone’s background, comparisons with other people from the same group, or the idea that a person has particular intimate characteristics because of their racialization. It can also be expressed through expectations about food, language, family or supposedly natural behaviours.

These mechanisms are often difficult to identify immediately, especially when they are framed as compliments. Yet constantly being reduced to one’s appearance or background can create distrust: is the other person interested in a unique individual, or in the image they project onto them? This question can make the beginning of a relationship more complicated.

To explore this distinction further, the article Love, Racism and Exoticization: Recognizing Stereotypes in Relationships recalls that a balanced relationship requires not reducing one’s partner to a fantasized identity.

Mixed relationships, communities and shared experiences

Sharing a background, culture or certain experiences of racism can create a form of immediate understanding within a couple. Family references, habits, expressions or lived realities may not require lengthy explanations. This closeness can provide a sense of relief and safety.

Conversely, a relationship between two people who do not share the same racial or cultural background may require more dialogue about issues that one partner does not encounter directly. That does not make the relationship impossible or less genuine. The challenge is being able to listen to an experience without minimizing it, without requiring it to be constantly justified, and without turning the other person into a permanent teacher on racism.

Sharing a community does not, however, eliminate misunderstandings, family pressures, gender dynamics or beauty standards. And not sharing one does not prevent the building of an attentive relationship. The central criterion remains the ability to respect the other person’s words, recognize their boundaries and question one’s own reflexes.

Personal wounds can sometimes influence attraction

Emotional history and trauma can also play a role in romantic representations. A person may unconsciously associate safety or danger with certain profiles because of events they have experienced. These associations are not a moral failing: they can be a protective strategy built over time.

Understanding them can nevertheless help distinguish what comes from free desire, an internalized social norm, a search for validation or a reaction to a wound. This work can be done through introspection, through dialogue when possible, or with the support of a professional if persistent suffering weighs on one’s relationships.

The search for validation through the gaze of a social group perceived as dominant can also be painful. It should not be reduced to a simple individual “choice”: it is rooted in collective representations that have long placed certain appearances at the top of the hierarchy of desirability.

Saying “I love you”: words, gestures and family codes

The expression of love varies greatly from one family to another. Some families say “I love you” easily and often. Others favour acts of service, sacrifices, gifts, being present in difficult times, advice, or attention to education and health.

These differences do not automatically measure the intensity of an attachment. A person may know they are loved through the actions of those close to them while still feeling the need to hear words of affection. These two realities can coexist.

Emotional reserve may be linked to family history, gender norms or cultural codes. It can also be shaped by collective and intergenerational trauma. In every case, expressing a need does not challenge the love one has received. Telling a loved one that one would like to hear certain words more often can open up a new space without imposing a single way of loving.

Learning to stop dwelling on the past and refocus on what helps one move forward can also support relationships when past wounds take up too much space. On this subject, letting go without denying what has been experienced means acknowledging hardship while avoiding letting it entirely govern the present.

Building a relationship without erasing differences

A respectful relationship does not require pretending that racial, cultural or social differences do not exist. On the contrary, it requires being able to address them without exoticizing, ranking or invalidating the other person.

Listen to discomfort without immediately responding that the person is “imagining things” or exaggerating.

Avoid jokes, compliments or questions that reduce a partner to their background or racialized physical appearance.

Accept the responsibility of learning independently rather than asking the other person to explain racism constantly.

Speak clearly about boundaries, expectations and experiences that make certain situations sensitive.

Recognize that an internalized stereotype can be deconstructed without claiming to be immediately free of all bias.

Colorism and racial fetishization do not define either people or couples. Taking them seriously nevertheless makes it possible to better understand what can undermine the feeling of being fully seen, desired and respected. In a relationship, the issue is not to deny histories and identities, but to ensure that none of them becomes a prison.

FAQ

Is colorism the same thing as racism?

No. Colorism refers to a hierarchy based on skin colour, often within the same community, with lighter skin frequently being valued more highly. It may be linked to broader racist systems, but it does not describe exactly the same reality.

Can someone be attracted to a person without fetishizing them?

Yes. Attraction becomes problematic when a person is reduced to a background, skin colour or stereotypes supposedly defining their personality or sexuality. A healthy relationship recognizes the individual’s uniqueness beyond any category.

Why do some people prefer to date someone from their community?

Shared experiences, common references or not having to explain certain lived realities can create a sense of safety.
