These representations, widely spread in popular culture, obscure the place this spirituality holds in the history, culture and everyday life of many Beninese people.

For its followers, Vodun is neither witchcraft nor an evil force. Beninese academics, religious dignitaries and cultural figures define it as a religion, but also as a philosophy and a set of practices that shape relationships with nature, ancestors, healing, the arts and the community. The persistence of negative stereotypes can notably be explained by colonial and missionary history.

<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_89 counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter class="ez-toc-section-end">

Marunon Kakpo, a professor of African literature and chair of the Vodun rites committee, describes Vodun as a doctrine that permeates different dimensions of its practitioners’ existence. He notably mentions medicine, pharmacy, cooking, performing arts and visual arts.

In this conception, Vodun recognizes an absolute being, the creator of all things, as well as spiritual beings of a higher order. These spirits, known as vodun, are associated with forces or elements of nature. Sakpata is associated with the earth, Tohossou with water, Oro with air and Hêviosso with fire.

This tradition has rites, rituals, altars and a clergy. Its practitioners therefore present it as both a cultural and religious heritage. Benin is frequently regarded as one of Vodun’s main cradles, although this spirituality is also present in other regions of Africa as well as in the Caribbean and the Americas.

The colonial gaze: classifying, devaluing and converting

According to historian and researcher Dieudonné Yanmankou, the devaluation of Vodun was part of European expansion from the fifteenth century onward. European navigators and missionaries are said to have approached other societies with the conviction that European Christian identity was superior and had to be imposed.

Within this framework, African religions were often described in pejorative terms: paganism, idolatry, fetishism, superstition or Satanism. These words did not merely express a theological disagreement. They also helped portray the peoples concerned as lacking legitimate spirituality, or even full humanity.

This logic is part of a broader history of colonial domination, in which political institutions, economies and cultures were profoundly disrupted. The issue of European expansion, slavery and racialization is also addressed in this article on the emergence of capitalism, expropriation and colonial expansion.

The role of Catholic missions in Dahomey

The colonization of Dahomey, which largely corresponds to present-day Benin, began in the late nineteenth century. In this context, the colonial administration and Christian missions contributed to spreading a hostile view of Vodun worship.

In Mission catholique et culte vodun, historian Martine Balard reports several statements made by missionaries. Monsignor Le Roy, of the Holy Ghost Fathers, described Vodun as a “collection of superstitions.” In 1909, Father Belle described Vodun worship as a reign of Satan. In 1925, Father Gauthier equated its practitioners with idolaters.

These discourses created the image of a continent steeped in darkness, to which the Christian West was said to have brought civilization and salvation. Vodun rites, dances and sacred objects could then be desacralized, scorned or presented as evidence of savagery.

This rhetoric accompanied the conversion project. From the perspective reported by the researchers interviewed, devaluing the ancestral religion made it easier to replace it with another religion and, more broadly, to adopt the norms of colonial power.

Haiti and the fear of a mobilizing spirituality

The Haitian Revolution holds an important place in this historical interpretation. Between 1791 and 1804, Africans enslaved in Saint-Domingue waged a war that led to Haiti’s independence. According to Dieudonné Yanmankou, the Bois Caïman ceremony, led by the Vodun priest Boukman with the participation of a priestess, was a moment of spiritual and political unity for the insurgents.

This interpretation highlights the unifying role attributed to Vodun in the liberation struggle. It leads some figures to consider that European powers subsequently saw this religion as a force capable of supporting the resistance of African populations and their descendants.

The history of slavery and its systems of deportation cannot, however, be reduced to a single formula or group of actors. It involved multiple networks, powers and societies, as recalled in the article on slave trades and the complexity of their historical realities.

“This will destroy that”: a symbol of religious replacement

In Ouidah, the proximity of the Temple of Pythons and the Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is a striking symbol of the relationship between Vodun and Catholicism. A local account says that the family owning the temple grounds offered land to the Church, while Vodun followers helped transport the sand needed to build the basilica.

At its inauguration, Monsignor Steinmetz is said to have uttered the phrase, “This will destroy that,” contrasting the cathedral with the Vodun temple, then equated with the devil’s temple. This statement is presented as the expression of a project of replacement: erasing a spirituality considered illegitimate in order to establish the Christian religion.

Sociologist Dodzi Amouzou analyzes this process as a form of acculturation. According to him, self-devaluation, psychological pressure and violence helped push some people to renounce their ancestral practices or observe them discreetly.

Legacies still visible in Benin

The consequences of this history remain perceptible. Some people still spontaneously associate Vodun with the devil, magic or spells, while others regard it as a tradition, a god or a path to knowledge. These contrasting perceptions bear witness to the depth of discourses passed down through generations.

At the same time, Vodun remains present in many Beninese homes and social spaces. Cultural figures point out that people may attend a church or mosque while maintaining a relationship with Vodun practices, sometimes without displaying it publicly.

The Beninese government has launched projects to promote this heritage: the restoration of convents as part of the Route of Convents, a national holiday for traditional religions on January 10, the International Vodun Museum project, and an International Mask Festival planned for August. The stated aim is to provide greater awareness of the rites, arts, dances and cuisine connected to this spirituality.

Moving beyond the opposition between faith and identity

Restoring Vodun’s standing does not necessarily mean imposing a belief or setting religions against one another. For those who advocate this approach, the issue is to have a tradition recognized in all its complexity, without reducing it to fantasies of violence or witchcraft.

This reflection also concerns the memory of domination and the ways societies reclaim their history. In Cameroon, for example, debates about colonization, repression and independence show how deeply the legacies of the past continue to shape contemporary discussions. On this subject, read the history of UPC repression and Cameroon’s independence.

Understanding why Vodun was demonized therefore requires distinguishing actual religious practices from the narratives constructed around them. Above all, it calls for recognition that African religions were conceived, organized and lived as spiritualities in their own right long before their confrontation with colonial and missionary enterprises.

Frequently asked questions about Vodun

Is Vodun a form of Satanism?

No. The practitioners and researchers cited present it as a religion based on the recognition of an absolute being and spirits connected, in particular, to the forces of nature. Its association with Satanism largely stems from hostile missionary and colonial discourse.

Why is voodoo associated with dolls and needles?

This association is described as a stereotype spread by popular culture, particularly American cinema.
