Long rarely discussed in the French public sphere, this conflict remains deeply embedded in collective memory in Cameroon. Its exact human toll is difficult to establish, but it is commonly described as very heavy, with tens of thousands of victims cited.<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of this history was the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC), a movement that advocated the reunification of the territory, an end to French trusteeship, and independence. Initially political and administrative, the confrontation gradually turned into open war in the mid-1950s. The movement notably brought together activists from Marxist and trade-union backgrounds, but it cannot be reduced to those origins. It united people from different linguistic and cultural communities and relied on associations, farmers, public meetings, and several newspapers, including <em>La Voix du Cameroun<\/em>, <em>Lumi\u00e8re<\/em>, and <em>V\u00e9rit\u00e9<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Its demands were clear: to end trusteeship, achieve independence, and reunify Cameroon. Between 1952 and 1954, Ruben Um Nyob\u00e8 and the UPC were heard several times by the United Nations. They called for an end date for trusteeship to be set, notably by 1956.<\/p>\n<p>During this period, Ruben Um Nyob\u00e8\u2019s strategy was intended to be lawful and peaceful. A reader of Gandhi, he favored political action, public expression, and appeals to international bodies over armed struggle. This approach, however, did not prevent pressure on the movement from intensifying.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Surveillance_divisions_and_political_repression\"><\/span>Surveillance, divisions, and political repression<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Before becoming military, the confrontation took the form of a political war. The methods cited included police surveillance, searches, intimidation, corruption, and the judicial or administrative harassment of UPC leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The colonial authorities also sought to weaken the movement by supporting or creating rival political groups. This policy of \u201cAfrican oppositions\u201d aimed to publicly challenge the UPC\u2019s positions and fragment its support base. Ethnic and regional rivalries were also exploited in this context.<\/p>\n<p>The spread of propaganda and counter-propaganda methods, inspired by the doctrine of \u201crevolutionary warfare,\u201d accompanied this strategy. A brochure attributed to Colonel Charles Lacheroy, then associated with the French experience in Indochina, is mentioned as a reference used by the administration in Cameroon. Under High Commissioner Roland Pr\u00e9, these principles are said to have informed directives specifically targeting the UPC.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1955%E2%80%931956_the_shift_toward_war\"><\/span>1955\u20131956: the shift toward war<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The year 1955 is often regarded as a major turning point. As local elections were being organized, the UPC mobilized in Douala and Yaound\u00e9 to demand independence and reunification. The repression of these demonstrations is described as particularly violent, involving live ammunition and reports of hundreds of deaths.<\/p>\n<p>In July 1955, the UPC was banned by colonial decree. This ban effectively excluded the main movement advancing independence demands from the elections held the following year. In several regions, including Sanaga-Maritime, resistance structures were then established to boycott the vote.<\/p>\n<p>The National Organization Committee (CNO) emerged as one such structure. The challenge to the electoral process, combined with the banning of the UPC, led to increased repression: the deployment of soldiers and paratroopers, operations against activists, and reported massacres in resistance areas.<\/p>\n<p>This is why two chronological reference points coexist in interpretations of the conflict: the collective violence of 1955 for some, and the end of 1956 and the rise of organized resistance for others. Beyond this debate over the precise starting date, the war formed part of a sequence that extended far beyond five years and whose effects continued long after independence.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_peaceful_struggle_to_armed_resistance\"><\/span>From peaceful struggle to armed resistance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The assassination of Ruben Um Nyob\u00e8 in 1958, the banning of the UPC, and the expansion of repression contributed to the formation of armed branches. The National Liberation Army of Kamerun (ALNK) was notably active in the Bassa and Bamil\u00e9k\u00e9 regions. Other structures are mentioned, including the Sinister of Cameroonian National Defense.<\/p>\n<p>These organizations did not present themselves solely as combat forces. They also sought to build support networks, protect civilians favorable to the independence cause, and promote a political project based, according to their statutes, on a new democracy and social justice.<\/p>\n<p>The clashes spread in particular to the West, Mungo, and Sanaga-Maritime regions. Fighters targeted property, individuals, and chiefs considered to support the administration. On the other side, colonial forces conducted repressive campaigns whose human and social consequences remain central to Cameroon\u2019s collective memory.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Independence_gained_under_severe_constraints\"><\/span>Independence gained under severe constraints<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>By the late 1950s, independence had become difficult to postpone. For the French authorities cited in the archives and testimonies mentioned, the challenge was then to preserve lasting influence after the formal transfer of sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p>This influence was notably intended to operate through key sectors of the economy, administration, and security. A \u201cnote on French sovereignty in Cameroon,\u201d drawn up after the UPC was founded, recommended investments in ports, railways, dams, and airfields through long-term leases. Ninety-nine-year concessions were mentioned for certain land and infrastructure, along with preferential terms in the hydroelectricity sector.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, Ahmadou Ahidjo became the central figure of the transition. His political rise was supported by French officials. Elected to the Territorial Assembly of Cameroon in 1947, then a representative in the Assembly of the French Union in Paris in the early 1950s, he was presented by several French actors of the period as a leader capable of keeping Cameroon within France\u2019s orbit after independence.<\/p>\n<p>Two months before the proclamation of independence, Ahmadou Ahidjo was installed as head of the country. With the support of French forces, his government pursued a policy of controlling and repressing the opposition. Arrests, torture, and targeted executions are mentioned in this context.
