France 3, recently renamed after having been known as FR3, issued a call for proposals to create science shows.<\/p>\n<p>Among the selected projects was <em>Fractal<\/em>, a magazine show presented in particular by Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Courant and journalist Patricia Saboureau. Jamy Gourmaud initially worked behind the scenes, writing segments. But this model quickly revealed a fundamental limitation of educational television: showing a place, an object, or a machine is not necessarily enough to explain how it works. Its original format was nevertheless very different from the one that became famous: there was no truck, no Marcel, no little voice, and no laboratory filled with pipes and models. Patricia Saboureau and Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Courant appeared on screen, while Jamy Gourmaud contributed a segment.<\/p>\n<p>By the fourth episode, Jamy Gourmaud had taken Patricia Saboureau\u2019s place. After a first season of 36 episodes, the format evolved again. France 3 then wanted a program that was both spectacular and explanatory, while remaining accessible to young audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Director Bernard Gonner proposed the idea that would leave a lasting mark on the show: a mobile laboratory set up in the trailer of a large American truck. The image suggested that the show could go anywhere. He discovered the subject alongside viewers, asked simple questions, and sometimes showed surprise or hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>Jamy Gourmaud, meanwhile, revisited the phenomenon in the laboratory. Using everyday objects, diagrams, transparent tubes, polystyrene balls, and miniature sets, he set mechanisms in motion. One brought the question to life; the other made the answer visible.<\/p>\n<p>This division also reflected a lifestyle choice: when this format was launched, Jamy Gourmaud preferred studio work, which was considered more compatible with his role as a young father. Originally intended as temporary, this choice ultimately shaped his work for many years.<\/p>\n<p>The voice-over, performed by Val\u00e9rie Guerlin, added a third perspective. It prompted, questioned, or teased the presenters. As for Marcel, a stagehand hidden behind the set, he animated many of the models. The journalists determined what needed to be shown, the model makers designed the devices, and the script was adjusted according to what actually became understandable on screen.<\/p>\n<p>A 26-minute episode required around two months of preparation, including research, writing, permits, model construction, filming, and editing. Several episodes could therefore be produced at the same time. This organization explains the level of precision required, including the urgent correction of a geographical error on a model.<\/p>\n<p>The truck laboratory was in fact a studio set. A real semi-trailer would not have been able to comfortably accommodate cameras, lighting, the technical crew, and the models. This openly constructed setting did not diminish the effectiveness of the format; on the contrary, it underscored the importance of concrete elements in transmitting knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>The models may appear handcrafted beside digital imagery. That is also what made them so powerful. They gave the impression that a complicated phenomenon could be handled, observed, and understood. They were surrounded by specialists, but their role was to convey information rather than impose inaccessible expertise.<\/p>\n<p>A basic question was never treated as evidence of ignorance. It became the starting point of the reasoning. The specialist contributed their knowledge, but the show took the time to start from scratch, compare, demonstrate, and rephrase.<\/p>\n<p>This way of presenting subjects helped make the program a tool regularly used in schools. Episodes were recorded and shown in classrooms, especially in science, history, and geography lessons. For many students, the television cart entering a classroom signaled a break during which learning could feel like recess.<\/p>\n<p>The show thus contributed to a shared body of general knowledge, much like other works that turn knowledge into accessible narratives. She then alternated field reports with Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Courant. Her arrival did not replace the original structure: it broadened the show\u2019s possibilities and enabled it to develop more topics.<\/p>\n<p>The program gradually expanded in scale. During a major feature on biodiversity, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Courant spent 28 days in the Republic of the Congo, where the team filmed the savanna, jungle, elephants, and gorillas. By the late 2000s, the team had traveled more than 400,000 kilometers and visited around forty countries. The show also received several Sept d\u2019or awards.<\/p>\n<p>Its success led to DVDs, books, board games, and video games. The models and practical effects were not merely decorative elements: they were the very language of the show. Three-dimensional images can be highly accurate, but they do not necessarily create the same sense of closeness as an object that is handled, imperfect, and visible.<\/p>\n<p>The truck later returned in a larger, more colorful version, while practical effects reappeared alongside infographics. However, the program was then weakened by declining ratings and its production cost, estimated at 100,000 euros per episode at the end of 2012. France 3 ultimately announced the end of <em>C\u2019est pas sorcier<\/em>, shortly before its twentieth anniversary.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_legacy_beyond_the_show\"><\/span>A legacy beyond the show<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After the program ended, separate projects continued this commitment to sharing knowledge. <em>Le Monde de Jamy<\/em> was launched in 2014. In 2015, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Courant created <em>L\u2019Esprit sorcier<\/em> with part of the original team. France T\u00e9l\u00e9visions then launched <em>C\u2019est toujours pas sorcier<\/em> in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>But the influence of <em>C\u2019est pas sorcier<\/em> can also be found in contemporary science communication practices. Many teachers, journalists, researchers, and content creators now begin with a very simple question, use concrete examples, and refuse to confuse knowledge with domination.<\/p>\n<p>The current role of digital tools does not change this need for pedagogy.
