A Baptist pastor, he made nonviolent resistance a means of fighting racial segregation, discrimination, and the political exclusion of African Americans. His life cannot, however, be reduced to his famous 1963 speech: his final years were also marked by his condemnation of poverty, economic inequality, and the Vietnam War.

Assassinated in Memphis on April 4, 1968, at the age of 39, he left behind the image of a determined leader, confronted with racist threats, FBI surveillance, divisions within the Black American movement, and personal exhaustion. His story sheds light on the decisive advances achieved in the United States, as well as the resistance they encountered.

<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_88 counter-hierarchy class="ez-toc-section-end">

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, under the name Michael King Jr. His father also bore that name before they both adopted Martin Luther, in tribute to the 16th-century Protestant reformer.

He grew up in a relatively stable Black middle-class family. His maternal grandfather, and then his father, were Baptist pastors. The church therefore became an essential place of education, solidarity, and public expression early in his life. There, young Martin discovered the power of eloquence and the importance of religious speech.

This family protection did not shield him from segregation. As a child, he saw a white friend stop seeing him because the boy’s parents forbade it. The two boys now had to attend separate schools. His mother then explained to him the history of slavery and the segregated system that organized, in the South, the separation of Black and white populations.

Another humiliation left a lasting mark on him: after an oratory contest, he and his teacher were forced to give up their seats on a bus to white passengers and stand for the rest of the journey. These experiences nurtured his early awareness of racial injustice.

Education, Ministry, and Commitment in Montgomery

A gifted student, Martin Luther King entered university at the age of 15. He studied philosophy and sociology, among other subjects, before turning toward the ministry under the influence of Benjamin Mays, a Black intellectual and Baptist pastor. Ordained as a pastor at 19, he then continued his education in Boston, where he earned a doctorate in theology.

In Boston, he met Coretta Scott, a conservatory student and gospel singer. They married in 1953. Two years later, the couple moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where Martin Luther King became pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.

Montgomery was then subject to segregation on public transportation. The refusals of Claudette Colvin, and then Rosa Parks, to give up their seats on a bus to white passengers became major episodes in the protest movement. After Rosa Parks was arrested in December 1955, local leaders created the Montgomery Improvement Association and chose the young pastor to lead it.

The Montgomery bus boycott lasted 382 days. The Black population organized itself: walking, carpooling, and mutual-aid networks made it possible to stop using the buses concerned. Martin Luther King was arrested, while his home was bombed in January 1956. Yet he maintained a line of peaceful resistance, inspired in particular by Gandhi.

In November 1956, the Supreme Court declared segregation on Montgomery buses unconstitutional. This victory made King a national figure and confirmed, in his view, the effectiveness of organized nonviolence.

Birmingham and the March on Washington

Alongside other activists, Martin Luther King helped establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, or SCLC. The organization sought to coordinate nonviolent actions throughout the South. Arrests, death threats, and violence now accompanied each of his travels.

In 1963, Birmingham, Alabama, became a decisive front. The city was marked by numerous racist bombings and brutal police repression. Martin Luther King organized marches, sit-ins, and acts of civil disobedience there. While imprisoned, he wrote his Letter from Birmingham Jail, in which he defended the moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.

Images of demonstrators, including teenagers and children, being attacked by police dogs or blasted by fire hoses sparked considerable outrage. They revealed to a large part of public opinion the violence of the segregated system.

On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King took part in the March on Washington alongside major civil rights organizations. Between 200,000 and 300,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial to demand an end to segregation and equal rights. His speech, remembered for the words “I Have a Dream,” permanently established his voice in American history.

In 1964, the Civil Rights Act ended legal racial segregation. That same year, King received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo at the age of 35. His struggle belongs to a broader history of fights for equality, also illustrated by the life of Jean-Baptiste Belley, France’s first Black member of parliament.

Voting Rights, Then the Social Question

Legislative progress did not eliminate discrimination. In Alabama, many African Americans were still prevented from registering to vote because of violence, intimidation, and discriminatory practices. After the death of Jimmy Lee Jackson, who was killed during a demonstration in Marion, activists attempted to march from Selma to Montgomery.

On March 7, 1965, police attacked the marchers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Beatings, tear gas, and mounted charges made that day known as “Bloody Sunday.” Martin Luther King subsequently took part in further mobilizations, leading up to the march that reached Montgomery. A few weeks later, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, which banned racial discrimination in the exercise of voting rights.

From 1966 onward, King broadened his struggle. In Chicago, he confronted a form of segregation that was less directly enshrined in law, but visible in poverty, substandard housing, high rents, and the de facto separation of neighborhoods. This campaign met with strong hostility and did not achieve the hoped-for results.

He drew one conclusion from this: legal equality was not enough when economic inequality persisted. This reflection echoes social realities that can still be observed, as shown in the article on poverty in the United States, between work, insecure housing, and unaffordable healthcare.

Vietnam, Poverty, and Isolation

In 1967, Martin Luther King publicly condemned the Vietnam War. He denounced the contradiction between the call for nonviolence addressed to African Americans and the military violence carried out abroad. He now linked racism, poverty, imperialism, and the economic system in a single critique.

This position cost him support. Some media outlets and political allies accused him of stepping beyond the strict field of civil rights. At the same time, the FBI intensified its surveillance. King was also challenged by Black activists who considered nonviolence too slow or too conciliatory. In the face of this situation, he remained faithful to his rejection of violence while adopting a more radical discourse on economic justice.

In 1968, he launched the Poor People’s Campaign and advocated a multiracial mobilization in Washington. The goal was no longer simply to obtain formal rights, but to fight the living conditions of poor workers and marginalized people.

Memphis and the Assassination of Martin Luther King

In March 1968, Martin Luther King traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to support the strike of 1,300 Black sanitation workers. They demanded better pay, improved working conditions, and respect for their dignity after two colleagues were killed by a defective truck that crushed them.

On April 3, at Mason Temple, King delivered his final speech. The next day, April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, he was struck in the jaw by a bullet. Taken to hospital, he was pronounced dead at 7 p.m.

James Earl Ray was arrested two months later in London. He pleaded guilty in order to avoid the death penalty, before quickly recanting. Until his death in prison in 1998, he maintained his innocence. Questions and theories have persisted regarding the circumstances of the assassination, particularly around the possible involvement of American institutions, but none of these hypotheses has been proven.

The announcement of Martin Luther King’s death triggered riots in many American cities. His legacy nevertheless goes beyond the simplified image of an orator carrying a consensual dream. He was also an activist confronted with failure, fear, disagreement, and profound fatigue; a man who connected peace with social justice and refused to separate racial equality from economic dignity.

To explore this journey further, see also Martin Luther King’s path from the struggle against segregation to his assassination.

FAQ About Martin Luther King

Why did Martin Luther King become a central figure in the civil rights movement?

His role in the Montgomery bus boycott, his consistent commitment to nonviolence, and his ability to mobilize large numbers of people made him one of the leading figures of the civil rights movement.

What major laws were passed during his struggle?

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended legal racial segregation, while the Voting Rights Act of 1965 prohibited racial discrimination in the exercise of voting rights.

Why did Martin Luther King oppose the Vietnam War?

He believed that the struggle against violence, racism, and poverty had to be consistent both within the United States and in American foreign policy.
