A Baptist pastor, speaker and activist, he championed a strategy of nonviolent resistance against racial segregation. His life was not limited, however, to his famous Washington speech: he also faced bombings, arrests, FBI surveillance, disagreements within the Black American movement and the hostility of part of white society.

Assassinated in Memphis on April 4, 1968, at the age of 39, Martin Luther King had gradually broadened his struggle. After helping to roll back legal segregation, he also denounced poverty, economic inequality and the Vietnam War.

<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_88 counter-hierarchy Atlanta

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, under the name Michael King Jr. His father, also named Michael King, would later take the name Martin Luther King in tribute to the 16th-century Protestant reformer. His son would adopt the name as well.

He grew up in a relatively stable, deeply religious Black family. His maternal grandfather, followed by his father, were Baptist pastors. The church was both a spiritual place, a space for solidarity and a platform for the Black community in the segregated South.

The relative comfort of his home did not shield him from racism. As a child, he lost the friendship of a white classmate when the boy’s parents forbade their son from continuing to play with him. The separation of schools according to skin color made the everyday violence of the segregated system visible to him.

Another humiliation left a lasting mark on him: after a public-speaking contest, he had to remain standing with his teacher during a long bus ride in order to give up their seats to white passengers. These experiences shaped his early understanding of racial injustice.

Education, faith and entry into activism

A gifted student, Martin Luther King entered university at just 15 years old. There, he studied sociology among other subjects, discovered philosophy and developed the conviction that refusing to cooperate with evil was a moral obligation.

Ordained as a pastor at 19, he then continued his studies in Boston, where he earned a doctorate in theology. There, he met Coretta Scott, a conservatory student and gospel singer. Educated, committed and sharing his convictions, she became his wife in 1953 and an essential source of support throughout his activism.

The couple moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where Martin Luther King became pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church at the age of 25. The city was then governed by segregation rules that enforced racial separation in transportation, schools, shops and many other aspects of social life.

The Montgomery bus boycott, a first major victory

In 1955, several acts of resistance to bus segregation preceded the movement that would transform Montgomery. Claudette Colvin, a young African American woman, notably refused to give up her seat to a white passenger and was arrested. A few months later, Rosa Parks was also arrested after refusing to leave her seat.

Her arrest sparked large-scale mobilization. Local leaders created the Montgomery Improvement Association and chose Martin Luther King as its president. The bus boycott was organized: the Black population stopped using municipal transportation, walked, set up carpooling and supported one another for more than a year.

Repression was severe. King was arrested, and his home was bombed in January 1956. Yet he maintained his commitment to nonviolence, inspired in particular by Gandhi. On November 13, 1956, the Supreme Court declared segregation on Montgomery buses unconstitutional. This victory demonstrated the political effectiveness of nonviolent mobilization.

From Birmingham to Washington: the struggle becomes national

Alongside other activists, Martin Luther King helped establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, intended to coordinate civil rights actions in the South. He traveled, gave speeches, took part in demonstrations and repeatedly endured arrests and death threats.

In 1963, Birmingham, Alabama, became a focal point of the struggle. The city was marked by numerous racist bombings and intense violence against African Americans. Demonstrations organized against segregation were repressed with police dogs and fire hoses. Images of Black teenagers and children being attacked or knocked to the ground shocked public opinion.

Imprisoned in Birmingham, King wrote a letter that became famous, in which he defended the moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. The mobilization led to negotiations and the end of segregation in the city’s shops.

A few months later, on August 28, 1963, he took part in the March on Washington alongside several major civil rights organizations. Between 200,000 and 300,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial to demand an end to segregation and respect for civil rights. The speech he delivered that day became one of the most significant of the 20th century.

In 1964, the Civil Rights Act ended legal racial segregation in the United States. That same year, Martin Luther King received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, at age 35. His struggle was part of a broader history of resistance to systems of exclusion, much like the life of Jean-Baptiste Belley, France’s first Black member of parliament, who fought for equality during the French Revolution.

Voting rights and the shock of Selma

Despite legislative progress, voting rights remained severely restricted for Black populations in several Southern states. In Alabama, violence and intimidation prevented a large proportion of African Americans from registering to vote.

After the death of Jimmy Lee Jackson, who was killed while taking part in a peaceful demonstration, a march from Selma to Montgomery was organized. The first attempt was violently repressed on the Edmund Pettus Bridge: baton beatings, tear gas and mounted charges left many people injured. The day would become known as “Bloody Sunday.”

Martin Luther King organized further marches, until tens of thousands of people reached Montgomery. Soon afterward, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, which prohibited racial discrimination in the exercise of voting rights.

Poverty, Chicago and opposition to the Vietnam War

From 1966 onward, Martin Luther King encountered new difficulties. In Northern cities, he observed that segregation did not always take the form of explicit laws, but manifested itself through poverty, deteriorating housing, high rents and the confinement of many African Americans to disadvantaged neighborhoods.

In Chicago, his actions met with violent hostility, and the results of negotiations disappointed some activists. Some young activists then regarded his strategy as too conciliatory. Other movements favoring armed self-defense or Black separatism gained influence.

King nevertheless refused to abandon nonviolence. He expanded his analysis to include the economic mechanisms that perpetuate poverty. This issue remains essential to understanding American social realities, including those described in poverty in the United States, from work and evictions to difficult access to healthcare.

In 1967, he publicly condemned the Vietnam War. This stance led to a break with several political and media allies. The FBI, which had already been monitoring him for years, intensified its pressure. Exhausted and aware of the threats against him, King nevertheless launched a new campaign against poverty.

Memphis and the assassination of Martin Luther King

In March 1968, Martin Luther King traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to support the strike of 1,300 Black sanitation workers. After two workers were killed by a faulty truck, they demanded better pay, better working conditions and respect for their dignity.

On April 3, at Mason Temple, King delivered his final speech. The next day, while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, he was struck by a bullet that hit his jaw, passed through his neck and severed his spinal cord. Taken to hospital, he was pronounced dead at 7 p.m.

James Earl Ray was arrested two months later in London. He pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty, before recanting a few days later. He maintained his innocence until his death in prison in 1998. Suspicions and theories surrounding the assassination persist, particularly regarding possible involvement by federal institutions, but nothing has been proven.

A legacy that goes beyond symbolism

The assassination of Martin Luther King sparked riots in many American cities. The country, already deeply divided, was struck by a major shockwave.

His legacy is often reduced to the image of a dream of racial brotherhood. Yet the final years of his life reveal an activist whose thinking had broadened: he connected racism, poverty, workers’ dignity and the violence of war. He argued that lasting peace could not exist without social justice.

FAQ about Martin Luther King

Why is Martin Luther King known?

Martin Luther King is known for his major role in the American civil rights movement.
