His work explores a simple yet dizzying question: how can one live when the world offers no definitive answer to our need for meaning? Through novels, essays, journalism and theatre, Camus defended a way of inhabiting this uncertainty without giving in to despair, hatred or the justification of murder.

His life was also one of an unlikely rise. Born into a very modest family in French Algeria, raised by a nearly illiterate mother, and weakened early on by tuberculosis, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature at the age of 43. His sudden death on January 4, 1960, gave his trajectory a tragic dimension: the writer of the absurd died in a car accident while an unused train ticket was found on him.

Albert Camus was born on November 7, 1913, in Mondovi, a colonial village in eastern French Algeria now called Dréan. His father, Lucien Camus, was a vineyard worker; his mother, Catherine, worked as a cleaner. The family owned neither land nor wealth, far from the images associated with French settlers in Algeria. It nevertheless held French citizenship, unlike the vast majority of Algeria’s population at the time.

Mobilized during the First World War, Lucien Camus was wounded at the Battle of the Marne and died in hospital on October 11, 1914. Albert was only 11 months old. He would retain only a few photographs and a family story of his father: that of a man shaken after witnessing a capital execution in Algiers. Much later, this image would inform Reflections on the Guillotine, a text in which Camus opposed the death penalty.

After her husband’s death, Catherine Camus moved with her sons to the working-class district of Belcourt in Algiers. The family lived in an apartment without running water or electricity. His mother, who was partially deaf, spoke little and had great difficulty reading. In The First Man, Camus would evoke the pain of a love that was impossible to express fully, since the person who mattered most to him could not truly read what he wrote.

This Algerian childhood sheds light on an essential part of his relationship with the world. It rooted his work in a concrete experience of poverty, silence, Mediterranean light and colonial divisions. Questions of identity and belonging also run through other accounts connected with Africa and its diasporas, such as the discussion of colorism and the social value attached to skin tone in Africa.

School, sport and illness: the first breaks

The intervention of his teacher Louis Germain played a decisive role. Convinced of the child’s abilities, he helped him prepare for the scholarship examination that enabled him to attend the Bugeaud secondary school in Algiers free of charge in 1924. In a letter sent after receiving the Nobel Prize, Camus thanked his former teacher: “Without you, without the affectionate hand you extended to the poor little child I was, without your teaching and your example, none of this would have happened.”

The exact role Louis Germain played in the steps taken with the family remains more nuanced, however: in his reply, the teacher stated that he had understood his pupil’s real financial circumstances only later on. Whatever the case, Camus explicitly acknowledged the decisive place of school and this teacher in his path.

At secondary school, he was a good student and an enthusiastic football player, playing as a goalkeeper. He said that sport had taught him an essential part of what he knew about morality and human obligations. But, at the age of 17, pulmonary tuberculosis brought this period to an end. Before antibiotics, the disease cast a constant shadow over his life and kept him away from sport for a long time.

This physical awareness of fragility would permeate his thinking. For Camus, death was not a philosophical abstraction: it was a lived presence, capable at any moment of interrupting plans, loves and ambitions.

The absurd according to Albert Camus

Two foundational works appeared in 1942: the novel The Stranger and the essay The Myth of Sisyphus. Together, they form the two pillars of what Camus would call the cycle of the absurd.

For him, the absurd did not mean that the world was absurd by nature. It arose from the confrontation between the human desire to understand, to find reason and coherence, and the world’s silence in response to that demand. Human beings want to know why they live, suffer and die; the world does not answer.

In The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus therefore examines the question of suicide. His answer is a refusal: ending one’s life would mean eliminating the person facing the problem rather than confronting it. He also rejects what he calls “philosophical suicide,” namely escape into a transcendent explanation that artificially resolves the absence of meaning.

The Camusian response is revolt: lucidly accepting the absence of a definitive answer and continuing to live. Sisyphus, condemned endlessly to push his rock to the top of a mountain before seeing it roll back down, becomes the figure of this active lucidity. Hence the famous line: “One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”

Journalism, the Resistance and responsibility

Before gaining recognition as a writer, Camus was a journalist. In Algiers, he worked for Alger républicain, an anti-colonialist daily newspaper, then for Soir républicain. When the latter was banned in 1940, he left Algeria for mainland France.

During the Second World War, he joined the Combat Resistance network and contributed to the clandestine newspaper of the same name. After the Liberation of Paris, he became its editor-in-chief. This experience strengthened his reflections on violence, justice and political responsibility.

In the aftermath of the war, Camus initially wanted collaborators to be judged harshly. But the execution of the writer Robert Brasillach profoundly affected him. Himself opposed to the death penalty and a signatory to a plea for clemency, he publicly reconsidered his position in response to François Mauriac, who had argued for greater moderation. This ability to acknowledge an error was an important feature of his intellectual approach.

From revolt to limits: the break with Sartre

With The Plague, published in 1947, Camus opened the cycle of revolt. The question was no longer merely how to live in the face of the world’s silence, but how to live with others in the face of evil. From this perspective, solidarity and human dignity became central.

The Rebel, published in 1951, develops this reflection. Camus distinguishes revolt, the act through which a person sets a limit on what is inflicted upon them, from revolution, which, when it claims the right to kill in the name of History, can in his view betray its own ideal. His phrase, “I rebel—therefore we exist,” thus connects the rejection of injustice with the recognition of a shared dignity.

The book caused a lasting break with Jean-Paul Sartre. Behind the public controversy lay a profound disagreement over revolutionary violence and its possible legitimation by a historical objective. Camus accepted that violence could sometimes be necessary, but refused to regard it as morally legitimate.

This reflection echoes historical debates on equality, citizenship and the sometimes unfulfilled promises of the French Revolution. The story of Jean-Baptiste Belley, France’s first Black member of parliament, likewise recalls the complexity of these struggles and their political reversals.

Algeria, a wound without a simple solution

The Algerian War placed Camus in a particularly painful position. A long-standing anti-colonialist, he had denounced the injustices suffered by Muslim Algerians in his articles of 1939. Yet his childhood, his mother and much of his personal history were bound to French Algeria.

On January 22, 1956, in Algiers, he called for a civilian truce: he asked the French army and the FLN to renounce, at the very least, violence against civilians. The appeal did not succeed. As antagonisms intensified, Camus subsequently chose public silence, believing that polemics hardened positions rather than encouraging reconciliation.

In 1957, during a conference in Stockholm after the announcement of his Nobel Prize, he reaffirmed his condemnation of terror while expressing his anguish for his mother and family. His stance was heavily criticized, but it remained consistent with his refusal to justify violence directed against civilians.

The Nobel Prize and an absurd death

Albert Camus received the Nobel Prize in Literature on October 16, 1957. He believed that other writers, notably André Malraux, could have been chosen before him. Yet his first thought was for Louis Germain, his teacher in Belcourt, to whom he dedicated his Stockholm speech.

At the time of his death, Camus was working on The First Man, a largely autobiographical novel devoted in particular to his father and his childhood. On January 4, 1960, he was travelling by car with Michel Gallimard, Janine Gallimard and their daughter Anne. The vehicle left the road, struck plane trees and broke apart. Camus, seated in the front, died instantly at the age of 46. His briefcase contained 144 handwritten pages of The First Man; a train ticket to Paris, which he had not used, was also found.

Published in 1994 by his daughter Catherine, The First Man offers a glimpse of a project that remained unfinished. Camus had envisioned a third cycle, after the absurd and revolt: that of love, under the sign of Nemesis and proper measure.

Why Albert Camus remains relevant

Camus offers no total solution to the contradictions of the world. Instead, he invites us to endure the gap between the human desire for justice and the limits of reality. His work defends lucidity, solidarity, moderation and the refusal to turn an opponent into an enemy to be hated.

This demand explains the enduring power of his texts: they speak of a concrete and vulnerable life, marked by illness, death, collective conflicts and the need for dignity. Albert Camus never claimed to be a saint; his work remains that of a man seeking to understand how to live without lies and without hatred.

FAQ about Albert Camus

What is the absurd in Albert Camus’s work?

The absurd is the confrontation between the human need to find meaning in existence and the silence of the world, which provides no definitive answer.

What are Albert Camus’s main books?

His most important works include The Stranger, The Myth of Sisyphus, The Plague, The Rebel, The Fall and The First Man.

Why did Camus oppose Sartre?

Their break concerned, among other things, the place of violence in political action.
