Yet they are also shaped by images, pageants, advertising, fashion, social media and everyday remarks. They determine which bodies are applauded, which features are highlighted and which can become grounds for mockery or insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>The issue cannot be reduced to a simple opposition between an African model and a Western model. Several standards coexist within the same country, or even the same neighborhood, and they can contradict one another. A very slim figure may be sought after in modeling while being devalued within a family circle. Even before a panel of judges evaluates them, the rules may already exclude some contestants.<\/p>\n<p>In Cameroon, the official rules for Miss Cameroon in 2023 included a minimum height of 1.68 meters barefoot. Contestants also had to be between 17 and 28 years old, single, never married and without children. These conditions do not merely determine who can compete: they also implicitly shape an image of the female body considered presentable in a prestigious setting.<\/p>\n<p>Height, body shape, physical presentation, and the appearance of hair, nails and skin then become institutionalized criteria. A woman may be seen as beautiful, educated or elegant in her own environment without being able to enter a competition intended to celebrate national beauty.<\/p>\n<p>This tension also concerns the aesthetic references being promoted. Pageants and certain fashion campaigns frequently feature tall, thin, slender women who conform to international modeling codes. Yet the real diversity of women in a country cannot be reduced to that selection.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Natural_hair_why_does_it_still_have_to_be_made_exceptional\"><\/span>Natural hair: why does it still have to be made exceptional?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The place of natural hair is revealing. In Cameroon, the Miss Napi Cameroon pageant requires the promotion of natural hair and prohibits wigs as well as chemical hair straightening during the competition. The principle is not to challenge the right to wear a wig, extensions or any other hairstyle. Every woman should be free to choose her appearance.<\/p>\n<p>But the fact that a specific pageant is needed to ensure the visibility of natural Afro hair raises questions. In a country where this texture is common for a large share of women, it may appear less visible in certain prestigious spaces than smoothed, chemically straightened hairstyles or hairstyles covered with wigs.<\/p>\n<p>In C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, the preliminary selections for Miss C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire sparked debate in 2025 after wigs, weaves and extensions were banned, a decision presented as an effort to better showcase contestants\u2019 natural beauty. Some people saw it as a positive initiative; others pointed out that wearing wigs is also a matter of individual aesthetic freedom. Above all, the debate shows that \u201cnaturalness\u201d has become an issue to be regulated in African pageants.<\/p>\n<p>The issues also concern skin color. The social preference for lighter skin tones, often associated with desirability, luxury or success, contributes to a hierarchy of appearances. This phenomenon lies at the heart of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianobtf.com\/en\/colorism-africa-light-skin-beauty-success\/\">colorism in Africa and its effects on perceptions of success<\/a>. It is not an isolated preference: when it is repeated in the media, casting calls and compliments, it can have a lasting effect on self-esteem.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thinness_on_the_runway_curves_in_everyday_life\"><\/span>Thinness on the runway, curves in everyday life<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Body ideals are neither fixed nor universal. The history of representations of femininity shows that the figures considered desirable change over time. In certain Western fashion and advertising sectors, the second half of the twentieth century reinforced the ideal of the tall, very thin woman. More recently, another figure has become established in popular culture: a slim waist, flat stomach, and fuller hips and buttocks. This standard, often described as \u201cslim-thick,\u201d requires characteristics that can sometimes be difficult to reconcile naturally.<\/p>\n<p>Changing views of lips and buttocks also illustrate these shifts. Features once used in racist caricatures targeting Black people are now sought after by people who undergo injections or cosmetic procedures. The physical features have not changed; the social value attributed to them has.<\/p>\n<p>In Africa, the gap between social settings can be particularly pronounced. Research conducted among women in Accra and Tamale, Ghana, brought out an ideal frequently expressed this way: not too thin, but not too fat either. Participants generally described a fuller, more curvaceous figure than the ideal of thinness often promoted by modeling.<\/p>\n<p>Another study, conducted in Accra among 2,814 women, indicated that the body figure most often chosen as the Ghanaian female ideal corresponded to an average body mass index of about 27.9. These data do not define what a \u201cgood\u201d body should be. Rather, they show that beauty references vary according to context and do not necessarily match international fashion standards.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thinness_can_also_become_a_target_of_stigma\"><\/span>Thinness can also become a target of stigma<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Pressure on women does not come solely through the expectation to lose weight. In several African contexts, being very thin can be associated with poverty, illness or insufficient food. A review of 73 studies conducted in 21 African countries identified, in different contexts, associations between thinness, hardship and illness.<\/p>\n<p>In Accra, research has documented nicknames and mockery directed at people considered too thin. This pressure can lead some women to try to gain weight, sometimes through overeating or the use of products. In Sudan, one teenage girl reported pressure from her parents, who feared that her low weight would give the impression that the family could not afford to feed her properly.<\/p>\n<p>In Cameroon, testimonies collected in a study sometimes linked weight gain after marriage to the idea that a husband takes good care of his wife and has sufficient resources. The body then becomes a social message: it is expected to demonstrate health, family prosperity, fertility or household status. This interpretation can weigh heavily on those whose body type does not match the expectations of those around them.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_aesthetic_pressure_becomes_a_health_issue\"><\/span>When aesthetic pressure becomes a health issue<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The market quickly offers solutions for every insecurity: creams, oils, suppositories, pills, injections and products sold on social media. Yet the pursuit of fuller curves can expose people to dangerous practices when the substances used, their dosage or the injection conditions are not controlled.<\/p>\n<p>In Cameroon, a medical case report published in 2024 described the treatment of a 35-year-old woman who had received, outside a hospital setting and in poor sanitary conditions, an injection of an unidentified substance intended to increase the volume of her buttocks. Ten days later, she experienced severe pain, fever and difficulty walking. Doctors found extensive areas of necrosis and an infection that had progressed to septic shock, requiring the removal of dead tissue followed by reconstruction.<\/p>\n<p>In C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, products promising a rapid increase in buttock volume circulate under different names. An investigation notably mentioned products called \u201cBobaraba\u201d and the misuse of substances such as \u201cDK de Rabolin,\u201d an anabolic steroid. These offers turn pressure surrounding the body into a commercial market, sometimes with no guarantee as to the actual composition of the products.<\/p>\n<p>In 2026, the Gauteng Department of Health in South Africa issued an alert after two people who had used unregulated injectable substances obtained through informal channels were hospitalized. The complications led to organ failure. According to the authorities, some products were even sold with equipment for self-injection, while one of them was presented as an essential oil whose safety data sheet indicated external use only.<\/p>\n<p>The Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, is a surgical procedure generally involving the removal of fat from one part of the body before reinjecting it into the buttocks. It carries serious risks, particularly when a fat embolism occurs. In March 2026 in Nigeria, the family of Elena Jessica, a social media personality, stated that she had died after complications linked to a BBL performed at an aesthetic facility in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>Individual responsibility should not make people overlook the responsibility of sellers of dubious products, people practicing without medical qualifications, and facilities that fail to comply with health regulations. Nor should it obscure the role of social standards that lead some women to believe their bodies must be corrected in order to be accepted.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Toward_more_representative_pageants\"><\/span>Toward more representative pageants?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In June 2026, Burkina Faso\u2019s ministry responsible for Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism suspended beauty pageants throughout the country while new regulations were being prepared. The authorities presented the measure as a way to better regulate these events, preserve national cultural identity and ensure respect for social values, ethics and human dignity.<\/p>\n<p>This decision raises a fundamental question: what meaning should be given to a national pageant if the criteria it values could be applied almost identically in any other country? Occasionally wearing traditional clothing is not necessarily enough to turn a standardized format into a complete representation of local identities.<\/p>\n<p>The diversity of bodies, hair textures and skin tones should not need separate spaces in order to be recognized. Yet specialized pageants have emerged to celebrate plus-size women or women with natural hair, including in the diaspora. Their existence provides useful visibility, but it also reveals the limitations of mainstream pageants.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianobtf.com\/en\/light-skin-africa-colorism-beauty\/\">effects of colorism on beauty standards<\/a> helps broaden the discussion: standards do not concern body shape alone. They also affect skin, hair, facial features, age, height and perceived social status.
