It appears in compliments, insults, dating criteria, advertising, casting, and cosmetic products. It is therefore not simply a matter of individual taste: when the same skin tone is repeatedly associated with beauty, luxury, desirability, or success, an implicit hierarchy takes hold.<\/p>\n<p>This hierarchy is all the more difficult to challenge because it is sometimes passed on without being named. A repeated remark about how dark someone is, a joke comparing dark skin to coal, or the idea that a \u201clight-skinned\u201d woman is automatically beautiful may seem harmless to those making such remarks. It arises when the narrative always repeats the same contrast: natural hair and very dark skin to signify hardship; long hair, a texture closer to Western standards, and a light complexion to signal social advancement. In that case, appearance no longer merely characterizes a person: it suggests that success requires moving away from one\u2019s natural features.<\/p>\n<p>This mechanism also affects posters, music videos, cosmetics campaigns, events, and model selection. The essential question is then simple: who is chosen to embody beauty, desire, modernity, and prestige? In some conversations, saying that a woman is \u201cbrune\u201d may be enough to convey the idea that she is beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, very dark skin can become the target of mockery or humiliating expressions. The supposedly humorous nature of a statement does not erase its impact. Why should a skin color, in societies that are overwhelmingly Black, be usable as an insult?<\/p>\n<p>These habits have concrete consequences. A child who regularly hears that they are \u201ctoo dark\u201d may eventually wonder whether their complexion is a flaw. An adult may internalize the idea that they will be seen as less desirable, less professional, or less suited to represent a brand. The slogan urged consumers to \u201cput them at your feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reaction on social media was immediate. Calls for the poster to be removed circulated, and Cameroon\u2019s Minister of Communication, Ren\u00e9 Emmanuel Sadi, intervened. The campaign was withdrawn from physical displays and social media. The case left a lasting impression because the staging did not merely suggest an aesthetic preference: it visually represented domination based on skin color.<\/p>\n<p>In cultural industries, selection criteria can also affect professional trajectories. Controversies in Ghana and Nigeria have notably fueled debate over the preference given to lighter-skinned models in music videos. When complexion plays a role in access to a part, an advertising contract, or screen presence, it ceases to be a simple physical attribute: it becomes a factor of opportunity or exclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Some justify these practices with technical arguments, claiming that dark skin is more difficult to film. The history of photography shows that tools and color calibration were long designed using references that favored white skin. The first Kodak calibration cards, known as \u201cShirley Cards,\u201d were based on images of white women. But the line is crossed when the objective is to permanently lighten natural pigmentation.<\/p>\n<p>The underlying commercial message is especially powerful: a lighter version of oneself would be more acceptable, more elegant, or more likely to open doors. An advertisement mentioned by actress Lupita Nyong\u2019o summed up this symbolic violence: a woman who could not find a job used a lightening product, then got the position.<\/p>\n<p>Skin lightening should not be approached through mockery. Ridiculing people who use these products while continuing to present light skin as an ideal means ignoring the social pressure that fuels the phenomenon. Some preparations with poorly known compositions, or products used over long periods, can lead to serious dermatological problems. However, it is not enough to demonstrate that colorism has disappeared. The real indicator lies in everyday life: do dark-skinned people have the same chances in casting calls, promotional recruitment, or selection to represent a brand? Are they valued without having to conform to a softened version of themselves?<\/p>\n<p>Fighting colorism requires questioning the words used, the images circulated, and the criteria presented as natural.
