Other artists would have continued to innovate, fill stadiums and transform musical genres. The global success of <em>Thriller<\/em>, followed by the exposure of songs such as <em>Billie Jean<\/em>, helped break down that barrier on American television.<\/p>\n<p>In a scenario without Michael Jackson, this opening might have taken longer. Artists such as Prince, Whitney Houston and Lionel Richie would undoubtedly have continued to find their audiences, but gaining access to such massive and international television rotation might have been more difficult. The issue was not merely one song or one music video: it concerned the ability of Black artists to become central figures in global pop, appearing on the same screens as the then-dominant white stars.<\/p>\n<p>This visibility also strengthened the status of the music video. The NFL then understood that this key moment had to become an event in its own right.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Jackson\u2019s 1993 performance represented a turning point. The artist agreed to perform without a direct fee, requested that production costs be covered and secured complete artistic control. His spectacular arrival, his prolonged stillness in front of the stadium and the structure of the performance established a new expectation: halftime now had to be a musical event capable of retaining\u2014and even winning over\u2014a vast audience.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the halftime audience then surpassed that of the game left a lasting impression. Without this performance, the NFL would probably eventually have invited major stars. Michael Jackson nevertheless added another logic: that of a monumental production, built with special effects, narrative staging, giant screens, hydraulic mechanisms, flamethrowers and industrial-scale technical organization.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Dangerous<\/em> tour used more than 1,000 tonnes of equipment, two specially fitted Boeing 747s and 65 semi-trailers. A team of more than 160 technicians could require up to three days to assemble the stage. This kind of deployment changed the very idea of a stadium concert: the performance no longer relied solely on musical power and the performers\u2019 energy, but on a complete visual experience.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s major shows continue that ambition. The stages of U2, The Weeknd, Taylor Swift and Coldplay belong to a landscape in which a concert is also conceived as a world of its own. In this context, record labels often favored a handful of strong singles intended to promote an album whose other tracks were seen as secondary.<\/p>\n<p>With Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson pursued a different approach for <em>Thriller<\/em>: avoiding filler tracks and creating a record capable of producing several hits. Of the album\u2019s nine tracks, seven reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 after being released as singles. The project thus helped restore the value of the album as a central object, one that could be bought and revisited as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>At its peak, <em>Thriller<\/em> sold 110,000 copies a day according to figures cited at the time. The revenue generated gave CBS the means to finance the activity of its catalogue and take risks with other artists. The album became one of the records the public wanted to own in this new format. In K-pop, synchronized choreography, high-budget music videos, strong visual universes and the cult of performance extend a formula that has become global. BTS notably paid tribute to some of his dance moves in the <em>Dynamite<\/em> music video.<\/p>\n<p>This globalization predates the internet.
